That’s what it’s like to be a man

poetry

So yeah… here is one for the new lyrics and poetry page

I can remember real clearly, I was five or six
And I found something that I wanted to fix
So I got out my tools and started unscrewing
Then I found my ball and forgot what I was doing
When mom got home I got a scolding
As it was a live wire I had been holding.
When what I had needed was a plan…
That’s what it’s like to be a man
<guitar>
That’s what it’s like to be a man
<guitar>
That’s what it’s like to be a man
<guitar>

I can remember real clearly, I was seven or eight
And it was the day of my first camp sleep-over date
Mom made a fuss about clothes and camp gear
while all I cared about was if I might get to see a dear
But when we got to the group I was going to join
Something stirred way deep in my loin
when she said her name was Ann
That’s what it’s like to be a man
<guitar>
That’s what it’s like to be a man
<guitar>
That’s what it’s like to be a man
<guitar>

I can remember real clearly, I was going on sixteen
And Ann was still the prettiest girl I had ever seen
When the day approached for the annual school dance
I thought I’d make my mind up and give it a chance
But when I got to her house I found my chance was blown
As I saw that she was there but she wasn’t alone
And said his name was Stan
That’s what it’s like to be a man
<guitar>
That’s what it’s like to be a man
<guitar>

Now that I’m forty-four I know I have might
Been able to do more like put up a fight
But I will always remember how Ann did smile
Sometimes I just sit down and think for a while
That if she had liked me back I might have known
The names of the children we might have had for our own
But instead I ducked and ran
That’s what it’s like to be a man
<guitar>
That’s what it’s like to be a man
<guitar>
That’s what it’s like to be a man
<guitar>

Because life is filled with surprise and expectation
As the experience leaves you with a firm basic foundation
Not to be a stupid sully boy, but to stop and think
As the moment passes at the moment that you blink
Take one day at a time and always remember
That before you know it, it is already December
So take your time and do the best you can…
That’s what it’s like to be a man
<guitar>
That’s what it’s like to be a man
<guitar>
That’s what it’s like to be a man
<guitar>
That’s what it’s like to be a man
<guitar>
<slow>That’s what it’s like to be a man
